| History.
The first recorded U.S. importation of Belted Galloway stock from the U.K.
to the State of New York occurred in 1939, with Harry Prock's Hapwood Farm
in Whitemarsh, Pennsylvania subsequently importing animals in the mid-1940s.
Mr. Prock founded the American Belted Galloway Breeders Association in
1951 along with H. Gordon Green of Quebec, Canada and Charles C. Wells
of Michigan. The association was incorporated in 1964 under the name Belted
Galloway Society, Inc.
Growth. From an initial handful of animals the breed has increased to almost 12,000 registered or recorded in the U.S. The Society's current membership includes 860 breeders. Registration. The Society registers black, red and dun Belted Galloways in its Herd Book, and maintains an Appendix which records upbred females. Upon achieving 15/16ths purity, properly marked females are eligible to enter the Herd Book. 'Properly marked' is defined as black, dun or red with a continuous uninterrupted white belt and no extraneous white, except that females may carry minor white on a foot below the level of the dewclaws. |
