Registry Requirements
 
REGISTRATION 

Rule 1.  Privileges of Registration 

 a.   All Vested Life, Life, Regular and Junior members whose dues status are current are eligible to register cattle in the Herd Book and record females in the Appendix. Non-members of the Society shall not be entitled to the privileges of registration. 

 b.   The use of 'certificate of registration,' 'registration' or 'register' in these Rules ahall have reference to animals listed in the Herd Book proper. The use of 'certificate of record,' 'recordation' or 'record' in these rules shall have reference to animals listed in an Appendix. 

Rule 2.  Eligibility of Animals 

 a.   The sire and the dam of any domestically bred animal, for which application for registration is made, must be registered in Herd Book or recorded in Appendix, in accordance with Rules herein, except as in e(ii) of this Rule. Exception would be allowed to permit making application for registration of domestically bred animals whose sire and dam are registered in the Herd Book of another Society, Association or Organization recognized by the Belted Galloway Society. 

 b.   A calf sired by a bull less than nine (9) months of age at the time of service shall not be eligible for registration. 

 c.   A calf produced by a heifer less than eighteen (18) months of age at the time of calving shall not be eligible fur entry. 

 d.   A calf born less than 283 days after birth of its dam's last previous calf shall not be eligible for entry, except in cases of embryo calves as provided for in Rule 5 of this section of the Rules. 

 e.     Herd Book eligibility requirements are: 

     (i)    Only properly marked animals are eligible for entry into the Herd Book. To be properly marked, animals must have a white belt or list completely around the body between the front and hind legs with no other white marks, except that white on the feet below the level of the dewclaws shall not exclude otherwise eligible females from registration. Belted Galloway cattle must be either black (including black with a brownish tinge), red or dun. 
     
        A.  Male and female calves that are the progeny of purebred sires and dams registered in the Herd Book. 
        B.   Female calves sired by purebred bulls registered in the Herd Book and out of dams that are 7/8 blood recorded in the Appendix. 
        C.   Female calves sired by purebred registered bulls out of purebred cows recorded in the Appendix. 
        D.   Properly marked bull calves (no white markings other than a complete belt) sired by purebred registered bulls, and out of purebred but improperly marked females recorded in the Appendix, shall be eligible for registration m the Herd Book. 
       
     (ii)    Herd Book Appendix eligibility requirements are: 
     
        A.   Female calves sired by purebred registered bulls out of base cows of another breed or cross. Such base cows may be registered cows of another breed or may be non-registered commercial cows. The Society will recognize and carry in its records (through 7/8 blood in the grading-up program) the breed of a base cow if registered in another breed. All other non-registered base cows will be carried in the records as crossbreds (XX). The certificate of record will identify such animals as 1/2-blood Belted Galloway. 
        B.   Female calves sired by purebred registered bulls out of 1/2 blood cows recorded in the Appendix. The certificate of record will identify these calves as 3/4 blood. 
        C.   Female calves sired by purebred registered bulls out of 3/4 bred dams recorded in the Appendix. The certificate of record will identify these calves as 7/8 blood 
        D.   Female calves without proper markings sired by purebred registered bulls and out of either purebred registered cows or 7/8 blood cows recorded in the Appendix, but which are not eligible for entry in the Herd Book because of improper markings, will be recorded in the Appendix as purebreds (PB). 
        E.   Markings: 
           ( I )    There shall be no requirement for proper markings in any Appendix animals except under provision (ii) E of this Rule. Note: It should be noted that bulls can be registered only from purebred parents recorded as purebred in the Herd Book, or when sired by a purebred registered bull and out of a purebred but mismarked female recorded in the Appendix. 
           (2)    The Appendix holds all mismarked purebred and all crossbred (1/2 through 7/8 blood) females, and provides the means to add improving genes to the herd, at the same time effectively eliminating undesirable traits from the breed. An animal's pedigree will show the ancestors' percent of purity as well as any mismarkings. These Rules provide for recordation of mismarked purebred females in the Appendix. 
         
    (iii)   Other requirements for Herd Book or Appendix: 
     
        A.   The animal for which application for registration in the Herd Book is made and its sire and dam must be naturally polled (free of horns or scurs). The female for which application for recordation in the Appendix is made must be naturally polled (free of horns or scurs). 'Scurs' are defined as any portion of homy tissue attached to the skin of the hornset of a polled animal. 
        B.   Application for registration or recordation of an animal received by the Society after two years from date of birth shall be considered only when accompanied by a written statement from the applicant setting forth the reason application was not submitted within the generally accepted registration period of less than two years from date of birth. 
        C.   The registration or recordation of any animal which does not conform with the requirements set forth in these Rules shall become null and void and, in such cases, the certificate shall be surrendered to the Society for cancellation.
 f.   Denotations in the Herd Book and Appendix: 
     (i)   Purebred females registered in the Herd Book with white on one oi more feet below the level of the dewclaws will be designated with the letter ‘W' as part of the registration number. 

     (ii) In both the main Herd Book and the Appendix, color will be denoted as part of the registration or recordation number. Dun colored animals will be denoted with the letter 'D.' Red colored animals will be denoted with the letter 'R.' Black animals will be denoted with the letter 'B,' e.g., 0000R or A0000D. 

     (iii) In the Appendix the recordation number on all animals will begin with the letter 'A.' Following the recordation number, the percent blood of Belted Galloway and the breed or breed designation of the base cow will be listed, e.g., A0000B3/4BG,AN. 

     (iv) Purebred females which have gained Herd Book status (15/16 blood and higher) through the grading up process will be denoted with a ‘PB' followed by the breed or breed designation of the base cow, e.g., 0000PB,AN. 

     (v) A denotation as to why a purebred female is in the Appendix for color marking reasons will be used. The following denotation will follow the recordation number: M1—incomplete belt, M2—no belt, M3—white feet (on or above the level of the dewclaws), M4— white elsewhere on the body, e.g., A0000M1
