The registration of Galloway Cattle in Germany!
    by Ole Grubbe

Every German country has its own herdbook society authorized by the government to register cattle. Due to this we have 14 herdbooks for Galloway cattle in Germany with the following three parts:

for Black Galloway Cattle, also registering dun and red animals as Dun and Red Galloway Cattle

for White Galloway Cattle, also registering the rigget colour of sure blood tested lineage as Rigget Galloway Cattle.

for Belted Galloway Cattle, also registering red belted and dun belted cattle as Dun Belted and Red Belted Galloway.

By order of the European Community the herdbook in Germany has to be an open one with a chapter for upgrading cattle called the "forebook" with two sections D and C and one chapter for the full blood / purebred Galloway cattle called "mainbook" with the three sections B, A and A-Elite.

The forebook is only permitted for registration of female cattle. Into the section D every purebred female cattle of unknown or unregistered descent will become registered after individual inspection as cow having the first calf, showing typical Galloway characteristics and general quality above average.

Into the section C every female will become registered as cow after the first calf, when sired by a registered bull and being out of a cow registered in the section D after again individual inspection, showing the above mentioned requirements.

Every heifer calf out of a cow registered in section C and sired by a bull with full registration and permittance for the brreed will become registered in the "mainbook," section B. All calves, male or female, of registered ancestry will become registered also in section B. Female cattle in this section B will become re-evaluated either into the section A or the highest A-Elite after individual inspection as cow having the first calf, depending on the quality.

Bulls by order of the government are permitted to become inspected and selected for the breed at an age of eleven months already, but in general the Galloway bulls by advancement of the Bundesverband Deutscher Galloway-Zuchter will become selected when older than 18 months.

Bulls of low quality have to remain in section B and are for beef only.

Bulls of medium quality or not being progeny of cattle registered in section A-Elite only can become registered and selected into the section A. Only their female progeny are permitted to enter section A-Elite later.

Bulls for the highest section A-Elite have to become inspected and selected as well above average quality and have to be out of a cow and sired by a bull registered in section A-Elite.

Requirements for registration of imported cattle!
Every imported cattle to become registered in the German herdbook has to be individually identifiable either by tattoo markings or by certified blood test and by official ear tags, all listed on the pedigree. The animal's export pedigree issued by the exporting society beside the normal data has to show three generations of full blood / purebred ancestors, affirmed by the breeder and an official of the society by signature.
