Dumfrieshire, Scotland

Alastair represents the third generation of Gourlays to breed Galloways at Castlefairn.  Asked for biographical information, he writes, "Having trained as an Investment Manager in Glasgow and London, I came back to farm in 1976 when I married.

"We farm 2,500 acres of hill land with about 150 acres of improved ground where we make our winter fodder -- baled silage.  At the moment we carry a stock of 100 pedigree Galloway cows plus followers and fatten everything not used for breeding.  There is also a sheep stock of 1,300 breeding ewes.  The herd has been established for over 100 years."

Alastair Gourlay is presently Chairman of the UK  & Ireland Galloway Cattle Society, serving the 5th year of his term of office.  Gourlay is also Chairman of the recently established Galloway World Council and is currently working with the U.K. Belted Galloway Society to establish the agenda for the next World Conference to be held in Scotland in June, 2000.
